Before we moved to The Villages — and before really thinking through what moving to The Villages would be like — I had a bunch of worries. I wondered what life would really feel like here.
Turns out, a lot of the stuff I worried about either worked itself out or just didn’t matter the way I thought it would.
Here are a few examples.
I Thought: “We Won’t Know Anyone”
What happened: We’re busier than ever.
One of my biggest worries was starting over. We didn’t know anyone here. I thought it might feel lonely.
But that didn’t last long. Just by being out — walking, going to the store, saying hi to neighbors — we started meeting people. Now, we’re always getting invited to something. Cards, golf, dinners, shows, parties. It adds up fast. I even had to learn how to use the calendar on my phone just to keep track of everything.
It’s not that we became best friends with everyone. But it’s a lot of friendly faces and more going on than we expected.
I Thought: “Everyone Will Visit All the Time”
What happened: It’s not nearly as often I expected.
We thought we’d have company all the time — friends, family, people coming through town. We even picked our house thinking we’d need extra space for guests.
But honestly, it hasn’t been nearly what we expected. People do visit, just not constantly. And that’s been kind of nice. Our days feel more calm, and we are not having to plan everything around visitors.
I Thought: “Traffic Will Be a Headache”
What happened: Once we learned the roads, it became easier.
We worried the traffic would be a mess. So many people. So many golf carts.
But the hardest part wasn’t the traffic — it was learning how to get around. The cart paths, the roundabouts, the best times to go places. Once we figured that out, it was fine.
I Thought: “We Don’t Need a Pool”
What happened: We enjoy it more than we thought we would.
We didn’t move here for a pool. We figured we wouldn’t use it much – especially with a community pool so close.
But we ended up really liking it — even on days we don’t swim. It’s just nice to look out and see it. It makes the yard feel more open and peaceful.
I Thought: “Privacy Doesn’t Matter Much”
What happened: It matters more than we expected.
We didn’t care too much about the backyard at first. We were focused on activities and things to do.
Over time, we started to really like having a little quiet space outside. A yard where we don’t have to close the blinds all the time. It just makes the house feel better.
What I’ve Learned
Most of the things I worried about didn’t go away completely. They just turned out to be smaller than I thought.
Living here didn’t fix everything. But it helped me focus on what actually matters in daily life.
And that change came quicker than I expected.
