The new Walmart SR-44 The Villages location has been getting a lot of attention lately — especially with the “store of the future” label.
So naturally, we had to go see it for ourselves.
“Store of the future.”
That sets a certain expectation. So we went through the store to see what actually feels different — and what doesn’t.
As of now, the answer is simpler than the label suggests.

A closer look at Walmart SR-44 The Villages
Walking in, the first impression is simple: everything feels new.
The lighting is brighter, the layout is easy to follow, and the store feels well-organized overall.
But there isn’t a clear moment where it feels fundamentally different. It’s more of a cleaner version of something familiar.
Overall, the Walmart SR-44 The Villages location feels more like an operational upgrade than a completely new shopping experience.
Where it fits into everyday routines
The biggest differences show up outside the traditional shopping experience.
The gas station makes this an easy stop if you’re already on SR-44 — groceries, fuel, and errands in one place.
The drive-thru pharmacy is less noticeable at first, but likely more useful over time — especially during the summer.
One area that actually feels different
The pool section stands out.
The selection of robotic cleaners and accessories is broader than expected, and clearly tailored to how people live around The Villages.
This is one of the few areas that feels intentionally different.
One thing that hasn’t shown up (at least yet)
Before opening, there was some expectation that this area might see heavier traffic — especially along SR-44.
As of now, that hasn’t really materialized.
Getting in and out has been relatively straightforward, and the parking lot hasn’t felt overly congested during typical visits.
That may change as the area continues to develop, but for now it’s more manageable than some expected.
As more development continues along SR-44 and toward Eastport, this location will likely become even more central to daily routines.
Where expectations start to shift
Some sections feel more limited than you might expect for a new store.
Grocery, clothing, and layout all feel familiar. There’s nothing wrong with that — it just doesn’t create a noticeably different experience.
During our visit, a few everyday items were out of stock, and pricing didn’t stand out compared to nearby options.
That may settle over time, but it shapes the early impression.

About the digital price tags
One thing you’ll notice right away is the use of electronic shelf labels.
These allow prices to update quickly across the store, often tied to inventory or promotions.
They still need to match at checkout, but it does introduce a more fluid feel to pricing — which some shoppers may notice.
What “store of the future” seems to mean here
After walking through it, the phrase makes more sense — just not in the way most people expect.
It doesn’t point to a better shopping experience. It points more toward how the store operates behind the scenes.
More automation. Faster updates. Tighter operational control.
From a customer perspective, that doesn’t always translate into something you feel directly.
The bottom line (for now)
As of now, this Walmart feels like a modern version of what already exists — not a completely new kind of store.
It’s more convenient in a few ways. But overall, the experience remains familiar.
For most people, the decision will likely come down to location — especially while traffic remains manageable.
Did the new Walmart feel noticeably different to you — or mostly like a newer version of the same experience?
If you’ve been through it, it helps to compare notes. That’s usually where the real picture comes into focus.
If this helped you get a clearer sense of what to expect, that’s exactly the goal.
